A good set of requirements for your packaging takes everything into account
If you have a customised packaging developed for your product, the set of requirements is an important starting point. But why? And what does drawing up a set of requirements actually bring you? I will be happy to explain it to you.
What exactly is a set of requirements?
In the set of requirements, or programme of requirements, you lay down all your demands and criteria regarding the customised packaging that you will have developed. You describe in detail all the minimum points that the packaging must meet. In addition, you describe your wishes. One of our packaging specialists will then translate all these requirements and wishes into the most suitable packaging solution.
What do you gain by drawing up a set of requirements?
With a clear set of requirements, you can make your packaging request very specific. And the more specific the better, because then you will have a packaging that is well thought-out and which meets all the requirements. What’s even better is when a packaging not only meets your requirements, but also delivers added value to your supply chain. Such as smoother processes, cost savings, higher turnover and very satisfied customers. This is why we, as packaging consultants, ask a lot of questions in advance. Not just about the product, but also about all the processes and links within the supply chain that the packaging affects.
What if your set of requirements is incomplete; what are the consequences? You can read more about that here.
How does a set of requirements help us as consultants to develop the best packaging?
The package of requirements gives direction to the packaging development process. You clearly define the basic principles of the packaging you want to have developed in advance, which makes it easier for us as packaging specialists to translate this question into the most suitable packaging design. We present this design to you before the packaging goes into production. This will give you a good idea of what the packaging will look like, and we can fine-tune the design even further from there.
As far as I am concerned, a set of requirements is indispensable, it is a solid basis for finding the best packaging solution.

How does the set of requirements provide more insight?
In all the preconditions that the packaging must meet. To give some examples:
- What does the packaging have to protect against? (Breakage, dust, temperature or moisture?)
- Is the packaging intended for presentation, to take to a customer or for transport?
- Is it a single-use or a durable return package?
- Which method of transport do you use: by air, road or water?
- Does the product remain in the packaging during use?
- Are there any batteries in it?
- Do you want to personalise (print) the packaging?
Of course, there are many more criteria that can be included in a set of requirements.
Do you always need a set of requirements for a package?
As far as I am concerned, a set of requirements is indispensable; it is a solid basis for finding the best packaging solution. Whether you come up with your own customised packaging or outsource the development entirely to a specialist. The set of requirements helps you to determine step by step which requirements the packaging must meet. It does not get any clearer than that!
