Protection of vulnerable and precious defense equipment for TITAAN project
Faes has a transport solution for fragile (communications) equipment with the "Extreme Case (half) 19-inch Aluminum Rack Series. The cases protect against water, dust and heat and are shockproof. They are very suitable to protect vulnerable and valuable equipment even in extreme conditions and keep it in good condition. It is not for nothing that the Ministry of Defense uses them with great satisfaction.
Defense's TITAAN project
Faes has been supplier of enclosures for the TITAAN project at the Ministry of Defense since mid-2004. TITAAN stands for ‘Theatre Independent Tactical Adaptive Armed Forces Network’ and is a network solution for the army and air force. This solution enables a robust and reliable network for military command anywhere in the world and under any circumstances. TITAAN enables military personnel to email, telephone (VoIP) and video conference among themselves. Anywhere.
Housing with air conditioning
TITAAN was supplied by Faes with 19-inch enclosures in 7- and 11 HE heights with air conditioning and heating element. This allows us to keep the working temperature in the cases – in almost all conditions – between 0 and 35 degrees Celsius. Even if the outside wall is much warmer. On mission in Afghanistan, a temperature of 85 degrees on the outer wall was once measured; hot enough to fry an egg on. The only disadvantage of this design was that the enclosures including equipment were very heavy.
Further development of TITAAN
However, TITAAN’s development center does not stand still either. Further development of the system has allowed them to modify the hardware. The ICT equipment can be multifunctional and smaller ICT components are used. Half 19 inches instead of 19 inches. So there is more space and heat emissions are much less.
Even after this further development, we were again asked to supply special enclosures for the system. We came up with a wonderful solution: half 19-inch enclosures without air conditioning. These are part of the ‘extreme range’. This series is often used within defense.
Half 19-inch solutions from Faes
The Extreme range is a large range of aluminum enclosures in both 19 and half-19 inch racks and available in various heights and depths. Inside the enclosure is a rack with dampers suitable for the heaviest transportation requirements. During transport, the enclosure is IP 67 covered by lids with twist locks. For operational deployment, a “skirt seal” is inserted to make the space between entry panels and enclosure dust tight.
Many options are possible in the lid; among others, overlay of cabling, and mounting for power supply. But also the enclosures with the same depths are stackable with each other and equipped as standard with a pressure relief valve and handles. At the request of our customers, the enclosure depths are available in many variations and are still stackable within a certain range.
